How to Land and expand tier-1 accounts
Hi!
For many Entrepreneurs, this summer was your chance to disconnect from the day-to-day and review how to deliver on year end revenues target and what growth looks like next year.
For many the answer to both of these questions is to "land a big account". This is also what your investor is looking for in a “lighthouse project”. Your real challenge is that you are selling into the most concentrated industries on earth.
One Company, TSMC controls 70% of the global semiconductor foundry market. One Company, ASML is the only global manufacturer of EUV lithography machines. Three cloud providers, AWS, Azure, and Google account for 68% of cloud spending. Four OEMs, FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa, and KUKA, ship 75% of global industrial robots.
But reaching these “giants” is not impossible. Take NVIDIA's acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Their secret? Become a critical part of the ecosystem for the largest chip company in the world.
The question you should ask yourself is: if you are a small early stage startup, how do you actually get a foot in the door?

It all starts with … a credible story.
Large companies buy differently
When you're a mouse standing in front of an elephant, asking for a enterprise-wide deployment on day one is a quick way to get ignored. The key to landing tier-1 accounts isn't forcing a massive upfront contract. It's getting one foot in the door, delivering immediate ROI to a single team, and expanding from the inside out.
Large companies operate by different rules in three areas.
Decision-making is not one person
It involves multiple teams, Operations, Engineering, Quality, IT, procurement and an executive sponsor. Winning one is not winning all.
Risk appetite is close to zero
Enterprise companies buy what is already proven. A Proof of Concept is a test, not a commitment. They expect enterprise-grade support
SLAs, account management, and training are part of the evaluation. A great product alone is not enough.
How then should you approach enterprises?
The enterprise procurement barrier
94% of enterprise buying groups have ranked vendors before any sales contact takes place. If you approach a large account the same way they approach any deal: get the meeting, make the case, win the business, you won’t even make the bottom of the list.
Mark Roberge, author of The Sales Acceleration Formula, shows that Small business accounts reach peak profitability around the fourth or fifth contact. Enterprise does not get there until the tenth Sales attempt or beyond.

So the question is not how to win the deal. It is how to get noticed by these giants. That starts with understanding how these organisations make decisions and their priorities.

Five ways to break into Enterprise accounts
1. Build credibility before you reach out
Start working with smaller companies first. There are great Tier-2 players in your sector that will make a great demonstration of value.
2. Talk to the operational persona, not the Innovation scout
Reach the person who lives the problem every day: the operations lead, the engineering director, the plant manager. Often the “Innovation Manager” is a one-way PoC Ticket.
3. Prepare a Proof Of Value, not a pitch
Once you are in the room, show what your technology has already changed. Data based benefits beats technical features anytime.
4. Match your message to your audience
An operations director needs business impact. An engineering lead needs technical depth. Lead according to your contact’s profile
5. Be ready for co-development and enterprise-scale delivery
Expect co-engineering discussions, custom contractual frameworks and be prepared to fulfil engineering and manufacturing capability at scale.

These are three tools our team relies on for enterprise account navigation.
Market Intelligence
Know whether a market is worth pursuing. Use market intelligence trends. Yole Group publishes market and procurement reports across semiconductors, photonics, and advanced sensing.
The Org
Map the structure of a target account and identify the operational decision-maker, not the innovation contact.
Know-Your-Customer Research with AI
Before you reach out, understand what keeps your contact up at night. Use AI tools like Gemini or Claude to research the operational challenges, strategic priorities, and public statements of your target accounts
How Synera built the framework to land enterprise accounts
Synera provides AI Engineering software for complex manufacturers. | ![]() |
Reaching the engineering teams inside those organizations is not a product problem. It is a commercial navigation problem. Getting there required a structured approach to enterprise procurement, the right entry points, and a sales narrative those buyers could act on.
With our support, Synera built the framework for reaching operational buyers inside global manufacturers. We defined their target buyers, developed their sales narrative, and structured their approach to each account. The commercial process came first. The reference list followed.
